BJP MLA Neelam Krishan Pahalwan Proposes Renaming Najafgarh to ‘Nahargarh’ in Delhi Assembly

New Delhi, 2025: Neelam Krishan Pahalwan, the BJP MLA from Najafgarh who recently won the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 by defeating AAP’s Tarun Kumar with a decisive margin of over 29,000 votes, has proposed renaming Najafgarh to “Nahargarh.” The proposal was made on the floor of the Delhi Assembly, highlighting the historical significance and the demand from local residents.

During the Assembly session, Ms. Pahalwan emphasized that the renaming effort has been a long-standing demand of the people of Najafgarh. According to her, the name “Najafgarh” was altered during Mughal rule, particularly during the time of Alam-II. She noted that during the revolt of 1857, Raja Nahar Singh played a pivotal role in reclaiming the region and including it in Delhi’s territory. The proposed name “Nahargarh” aims to honor this legacy and restore the area’s historical identity.

“The people of Najafgarh have high hopes that this Assembly will support our efforts to restore the original name. The name ‘Nahargarh’ reflects the bravery and sacrifice of Raja Nahar Singh, who fought valiantly during the 1857 revolt,” said Ms. Pahalwan.

The push for renaming areas with historical significance has gained momentum among BJP leaders in Delhi. After securing victory in Mustafabad, senior BJP leader Mohan Singh Bisht also announced plans to propose renaming the constituency to “Shiv Puri” or “Shiv Vihar.”

The proposal comes during the first session of the eighth Delhi Assembly, following the BJP’s decisive victory in the February 5 elections. The BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, bringing an end to AAP’s over-a-decade-long rule. The AAP was reduced to 22 seats, while the Congress failed to secure any seats in the Assembly.

The renaming initiative aligns with the BJP’s broader vision of reviving historical and cultural heritage. Ms. Pahalwan’s proposal reflects a deep commitment to preserving the legacy of Najafgarh and fulfilling the aspirations of its residents.
